Daily routine has a huge effect on health and wellness. Quality of nutrition, interpersonal relations, psychological habits, sleep and exercise are more important determinants of health than our genetics. As conventional medicine has imposed more potent interventions, the emphasis on lifestyle has been superseded by drugs and surgery.
It is becoming increasingly clear that the outcomes of these approaches are less and less desirable and Lifestyle Medicine or Health Psychology is becoming the treatment of choice. Back in the 1980’s lifestyle medicine was referred to as Holistic Health. Lifestyle alterations can make a huge impact on health, well being and cognitive functioning. The National Center for Alternative & Complementary Medicine is a good resource for information on this kind of treatment.
However, everything is not lifestyle. For example, the obesity epidemic may not be just a matter of lifestyle because animals are also getting heavier. Over the past several decades, average mid-life body weights have risen among primates and rodents living in research colonies, as well as among feral rodents and domestic dogs and cats. The consistency of these findings among animals living in varying environments suggests the possibility that the causes of increasing body weight may involve several as-yet unidentified and/or poorly understood factors (e.g. environmental toxins, viral pathogens, epigenetic factors).
“As we age, all physical and most cognitive functions tend to decline. The good news is that in the cognitive realm, wisdom and knowledge can, under the right circumstances, continue to increase throughout the lifespan. Indeed, it is said that if there were an Olympic event for wisdom, it would be won by octogenarians. The elderly may have a greater capacity to regulate emotion.“
Many aspects of physical fitness can be improved at any age. Some thirty-five years ago during a graduate course in Lifespan Developmental Psychology I was ridiculed by my well authored professor for suggesting that by the year 2000 we would begin to see a dramatic rise in the number of centenarians. It now appears his condemnation may have been overly shortsighted.
There are many ways we can improve and extend our lifespan. However, one of the most excitingly new methods for doing this is with the discovery of the “Immortality Enzyme”. This enzyme can reverse aging in every cell in our bodies.
New research shows that there is one main cause behind aging and it is the continuing process of Telomere Shortening.
The telomere is sort of a cap at the end of each strand of our DNA that keeps the chromosome from unraveling after each cell division. Each time the cell divides the telomere becomes a little shorter. When there is no longer enough telomere or end cap to hold the DNA together chronic health problems begin to manifest. Shortened telomeres may manifest in such health conditions as cancer, atherosclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoarthritis, macular degeneration, skin aging, risk of heart attack and many more life threatening conditions.
Until now, science thought it was impossible to reverse telomere length and hence reverse aging. When the “immortality enzyme” was discovered thinking changed and it appears it is now possible to halt and even reverse aging to some degree.
This miracle enzyme is called telomerase. Telomerase causes the telomeres at the end of the chromosomes to grow longer; thereby, strengthening the integrity of the chromosomal structure. As we age, we produce less and less telomerase until the telomerase gene shuts off. We can now reactivate our telomerase gene with TA-65.
TA-65 was given to a sample of volunteers after measuring their levels of telomerase. At the end of the study, their levels of telomerase were once again measured and what the researchers found was amazing. The telomerase levels of the study group tripled! Their eyesight improved, their sexual performance was enhanced, skin became smoother, and their immune systems were stronger. The result being, increasing telomerase lengthens shortened telomeres and improves overall health.
TA-65 is manufactured by T.A. Sciences and is a patented extract from the Chinese herb Astragalus. Does it really work to increase telomere length? An independent research company in Reno, Nevada, Sierra Sciences says it does. They proved that TA-65 does activate telomerase.
